Overview

This course discusses the importance of screening for cognitive impairments at wellness visits with appropriate screening tools as well as the guidelines on referrals outside of primary care. This course also defines cognitive impairment in older adults using the DSM-5 criteria. Guidance on how to implement non-pharmacological and pharmacological approaches in the management of older adults with mild cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are also listed.

  • Identify different types of dementia and risk factors that may contribute to them. 

  • Describe signs and symptoms of cognitive impairment. 

  • Discuss common screening tools for cognitive impairment. 

  • Explain non pharmacological and pharmacological approaches to the management of cognitive impairment within older adults.
