Nurse Residency Program in Long-Term Care

group of people for the nurse residency program

The Nurse Residency Program is a 6-month clinical-academic partnership provided to nurses new to long-term care. It is a cohort based, multi-modal program through which evidence has demonstrated increased nurse retention, nurse satisfaction, and clinical and professional knowledge. Preceptor education promotes increased sensitivity to the importance of having a culture that recognizes the needs of new nurses and supports their development.

Program Components

  1. One-on-one time between preceptors and nurse residents
  2. Online asynchronous coursework on professional skills and clinical care of older adults,  including practice-based case studies
  3. Online education for nurse preceptors
  4. Regular peer guidance meetings for nurse residents
  5. Evaluations and surveys to track nurse resident progress and satisfaction
  6. Regular sessions for the nurse residents and academic mentor(s)
  7. Multiple feedback opportunities for the nurse residents and preceptors

Objectives for Nurse Residents

  1. Recognize long-term care as a meaningful and fulfilling career option
  2. Prepare for the complexities of the long-term care environment
  3. Develop the knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attitudes needed to provide quality gerontological care
  4. Apply evidence-based care that ensures quality patient outcomes

Commitment

There must be a full commitment from the long-term care community to create a supportive environment for the nurse residents and preceptors and allow for accommodations for nurse residents and preceptors to participate in and complete the program.

I wanted to become an emergency room nurse, but thanks to this program, I wouldn’t leave long-term care for anything.

--Nurse Resident

The most valuable thing I found about this program is helping our new nurses stay in long-term care.

--Preceptor

I have gleaned a more in-depth understanding of age-friendly care as well as specific interventions for my practice area.

Being a preceptor has brought something in me that I thought I never had–being an effective leader.
