Overview

The course defines and describes the purpose of advance directives. It also outlines the primary care practitioner’s responsibility related to advance directives. After completing this course, practitioners will be able to differentiate living wills and health care proxy documents, convey appropriate and timely information on advance directives to patients and their families, and identify patient characteristics consistent with a lack of decision-making capacity.

  1. Discuss aspects of advance directives and advance care planning, discuss the concept of “decision making capacity”
  2. Discuss the content of a health care proxy and the responsibilities of the healthcare agent
  3. Differentiate between different types of advance directives documents such as the MOLST and the POLST
  4. Outline the legal and ethical responsibilities of the healthcare team in completing and executing a patient’s advance directives.
