Falling Through the Cracks

Shiya Lian

Shiya Lian, BSN graduate of NYU Meyers and a previous HIGN Scholar, wrote a column for McKnight's Long-Term Care news on the high rate of falls among older adults in nursing homes. Ms. Lian noted in her column that nursing homes have successfully minimized falls by adopting hospital fall prevention strategies, including: individualized comprehensive risk assessments, environmental modifications, such as reducing clutter, and staff one-to-one sitting for those with a high risk of falls.
