Description

The Integrating the Geriatric Surgery Verification (GSV) Program with the 4Ms Course introduces health professionals on how to incorporate the 4Ms and the Geriatric Surgery Verification Program into their practice.

Overview

By completing this course, learners will be able to describe the relationships between the GSV and the 4Ms, describe how to determine what matters to an older person having surgery, recognize the risks and limitations of multiple medications for older adults having surgery, recognize signs and symptoms in mentation in older adults having surgery, explain the importance of maintaining mobility in older adults throughout the surgical experience, and discuss how the GSV can incorporate the 4Ms into the established standards.

The Integrating the Geriatric Surgery Verification (GSV) Program with the 4Ms course and case studies is a series that was created to educate health professionals on how to incorporate the 4Ms (What Matters, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility) and the Geriatric Surgery Verification Program into practice. It was created by the Hartford Institute of Geriatric Nursing (HIGN) at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing, in partnership with Rochester Regional Health. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS) served as consultants for the educational content included in this series. This series includes one introductory course and four case studies. The introductory course discusses the perioperative experience as implemented through the GSV standards and the 4Ms framework. Each case study focuses on one phase of the perioperative experience (pre-operative, intra-operative, post-operative, and discharge). Throughout each interactive case study the learner assesses and determines best practices for caring for the older adult patient based on the 4Ms framework and the Geriatric Surgery Verification Program standards.
